What Is Emotional Literacy, and Why Does It Matter?

Emotional literacy is the ability to recognize, name, understand, and respond thoughtfully to feelings, both our own and those of others. For children aged 4–10, this is not a soft extra. It is foundational. Research consistently shows that children who can identify and articulate their emotions are better equipped to navigate friendships, manage stress, engage in learning, and build resilience throughout their lives.

Yet for most children, no one ever explicitly teaches them this language. They are expected to "calm down," "be brave," or "stop crying" without ever being shown how. The Soft Steps Passport begins there: with the radical, gentle act of simply paying attention to what is happening inside.
